Elliot Minor
THERE were some worried looks and hastily stashed pints when this CityLife reviewer walked into the Union bar at the Uni.
"Someone’s mum’s arrived," I’m sure I heard it whispered – well if I was one of their mums I’d have been a gymslip one… well almost.
It has to be said that most of Elliot Minor’s audience at the Academy on Tuesday probably had school the next morning – indeed some had actually brought mum and dad along.
But then every kid’s got to place their baseball booted foot somewhere on the music ladder and at the moment Elliot Minor is a pretty good rung to teeter on.
Though like McFly for those youngsters that favour smudged kohl over a fresh scrubbed face, Elliot Minor have more musical talent.
We are assured in their press release that the five-piece from York are all classically trained musicians and their deftness with their instruments (no sniggering now class) certainly shows.
They build up their stage entrance, teasing easy squeals from the predominately girly crowd, and finally launch into the melodic riffs of Running Away.
Respectable hour
Despite only having one album release so far they still manage to piece together a respectable hour and a half set with a mixture of hits, album tracks and new stuff.
The guys have range; it’s a skilful blend of faux American vocals against a mixture of rock guitar, acoustic strumming all the way through to jangling pop plus a bit of piano thrown in here and there.
There’s some sweetly rebellious banter for good measure too – a bit of swearing, talk of their genitalia and encouragement crowd surfing - it’s pretty tame stuff all clean middle class fun.
If you’re over the age of 18 there’s not much to get excited about here, but who knows where they’ll progress over the years.
And let’s face it the kids could be doing a lot worse – like listening to whatever the latest pop puppet from X-Factor is releasing.
