Ladyhawke
LITTLE Boots opens tonight's show wearing what appears to be a hijab, but it's soon clear she has been rummaging through the dressing-up box rather than making a political point.
Small, blonde and wearing over-sized shoes, she initially gives the impression of being a little-girl-lost on stage but transforms into a mini-Donna Summer the instant she starts to sing.
Apart from some clumsy but charming banter between songs, she's hugely endearing to watch – particularly since the sneery punk stylings off her previous band, Dead Disco, have been consigned to the dumper.
The new songs are much stronger than blog-favourites 'Meddle' and 'Stuck On Repeat', giving a massive nod toward early 1980s disco music, with the added bonus of using bizarre new instrument the Yamaha Tenori-on – a box with pretty flashing lights that somehow creates perfect spangly disco sounds.
Coming from Blackpool with an accent to match, Little Boots is the Human League to Hercules & Love Affair's Talking Heads.
In stark contrast is tonight's headliner, Ladyhawke, aka Pip Brown and backing band. Despite having one of the year's best debut albums, fantastic songwriting skills and a host of excellent remixes, tonight's live show is sorely lacking.
Dressed down in T-shirt, jeans and mussy hair, Pip doesn't seem nervous so much as bored to be on stage. Songs are messy and rushed, with barely a word spoken between songs.
While The Roadhouse isn't known for having great sound, tonight is particularly poor – drums sound muffled, guitars sound tinny and it's doubtful whether Ladyhawke's microphone is even switched on.
Even future-classic songs such as 'My Delirium' and 'Dusk Til Dawn' sound unspectacular, like bargain-bin indie rather than the uplifting Fleetwood Mac-style anthems recorded on her album.
Much credit to her producer, but after tonight's disappointing show Pip deserves to be renamed Lacklustrehawke.
