Get your skates on and go to Piccadilly

OPEN air skating in Manchester has been one of the jewels in the crown of the city's Christmas attractions.

On the rink City centre spokesman Coun Pat Karney said: "It's absolutely fantastic. Around 10 years ago we had an open air rink in Albert Square.

"I have had more letters asking if we could bring it back than about anything else.

"I think this is going to be one of the major attractions this Christmas and I can see us being asked is if we can launch it in August next year.

Lights

"Without doubt Manchester is now Santa's favourite city. We've got the Big Wheel back, the festive markets, a million lights and now ice skating."

The rink, which is open seven days a week until January 7, (except Christmas Day), will provide a seasonal centrepiece for the city, with new lighting providing a stunning backdrop by night.

The rink, organised by the council and private sector developers, aims to bring Christmas into the heart of the city and provide family-friendly entertainment.
