Making peace with war

A BLAST from the past is brought to us in an exhibition at Salford Museum and Art Gallery held until February 23.   The exhibition called Their Past Your Future has been developed by the Imperial War Museum. It aims to build links between then and now to demonstrate that despite the passing of time, the effects of the Second World War seeps through the generations.   Their Past Your Future is understood through personal stories of people who lived at that time, including diary extracts and letters to encourage visitors to explore war from a local perspective.   Councillor Barry Warner, lead member for culture and sport said: "It's an important exhibition that will touch a lot of visitors to the museum."   Troubled   A series of free events, reflecting troubled times will also run alongside the exhibition.   Salford-born writer David Constantine will share some of his poetry and talk about his experience of growing up in post-war Salford on Wednesday February 1. To meet David at the Salford Museum and Art Gallery call 0161 788 0800.   Salfordian Marvin Freeman will be appearing at Broadwalk Library on Saturday  February 4 to lead a workshop on tackling our own personal battles. To book a place, call 0161 737 5802.   Cathy Bolton, the writing development worker for Commonword Community Publishers, will lead a discussion on poems inspired by armed conflict and its aftermath at Walkden Library on Thursday February 9. To book a place call 0161 790 4579.   On Saturday February 11, the award-winning author of Tipping the Velvet and Fingersmith, Sarah Waters, will be at Walkden Library where she will discuss how history is brought to life in her novels. Salford Museum and Art Gallery is open Monday - Friday 10am - 4.45pm and Saturday and Sunday 1pm - 5pm.
