The Lowry exceeds all expectation

THE Lowry started as a joke and now it is hosting the north west's biggest comedy festival.

Twelve years ago architect Peter Hunter sketched a picture of the Albert Hall onto a plan of Salford Quays when he was helping to redevelop the area.

His whimsical drawing was the start of a dream which is now one of the top arts venues in the country.

On Friday deadpan comedian Jack Dee will take to the stage at the centre. The festival also includes comedy theatre.

On November 24 Alexander Armstrong and Ben Miller, whose outrageous Channel 4 show has so far run to three series, will be performing. Their X-rated sketch show has earned them the description ''purveyors of the finest barmy filth on TV''.

Theatre programmer David Fry, said: ''Comedy festivals are more popular than ever and competition is fierce. We are confident that this unique venue coupled with an impressive and unusual line-up makes us stiff competition.''
