Must see: Caribbean Carnival 2010

Caribbean Carnival 2010 Caribbean Carnival 2010

Alexandra Park, Moss Side - August 14 and 15, 2010

Perhaps it’s the sunshine (we hope!) or the endless weeks of school holidays, but one thing’s for sure: summer is the season when the whole world likes to parade.

There are countless colourful marches in and around Manchester now, but few are such a vivid expression of community and culture as the Caribbean Carnival centred around Alexandra Park in Moss Side.

Music is key as the parade winds its way around the park and Moss Side area then up into Manchester, featuring steel bands, DJs, dancers, carnival queens, costumes characters and local community groups on decorated floats.

Back at the park, there will be Caribbean food stalls and live calypso, soca and reggae music on the main stage.

The forecast? Well, that’s sadly for drizzle. But event organiser Mike Bisson isn’t worried about showers, as he told us earlier this week. “If it’s grey it’s no problem,” he says. “It will be vibrant and it will be colourful.”

Midday-8pm. Free.
