Must see: The Hairy Bikers
If there’s a pair of cooks on TV today that sum up the phrase ‘food, glorious food’, it’s the Hairy Bikers.
Simon King and David Myers have reignited the nation’s love affair with good grub – from hearty English standards like pie and mash to exotic flavours picked up on their international travels.
So popular are the duo, in fact, that they’ve had to put together a live tour – a national jaunt around UK theatres that has had to be extended by an extra 22 dates (almost doubling the tour) to keep up with demand for tickets.
Put together with the help of comedian Bob Mortimer – better known as one half of comedy duo Reeves and Mortimer – the show is billed as a tasty trip through the Bikers’ past and present, taking in everything from baby photos and screen tests to cookery demos and tasting sessions.
“Food is the biggest common denominator,” says David about the show’s success. “It cuts through class, religion, race and nationality. It’s something everyone can understand.”
But it’s Bob that’s shown them how to bring the magic of cooking alive on stage, David adds. “Bob had made it a show rather than a collection of rambling stories. He’s used to crafting shows, so this will a proper night out. Never fear – people will not feel short-changed.”
