Content with Chez Damier - Roadhouse
The last time we caught up with Content’s Chris Poole was six months ago, as he prepared, along with fellow promoters and DJs Eddie Leader, Rashid Khan, Lee Daley, Dan McGlynn and Josh Hewitt, to launch his new night into Manchester’s cold and unforgiving autumn clubbing climate.
Unlike many clubs which choose to co-ordinate their arrival into the world with the start of bad weather and dark nights, Content has not petered out nor fallen by the wayside.
Instead, the club has gone from strength to strength via a combination of high quality bookings, the nurturing of a friendly party atmosphere and good word of mouth.
Since that first party with Detroit techno and acid house hero Rolando, whose Underground Resistance and Los Hermanos pedigree was in evidence from the word go, Content has not looked back.
“We’re chuffed to bits that the night has gathered such an outstanding following in the short space of time it’s been going,” says Poole.
This month, the club welcomes another Motor City legend: Chez Damier, one of the founding fathers of the Detroit scene and a man who was instrumental in the setting up of the city’s fabled Music Institute nightclub.
His set at Content marks the culmination of many months of hard work for Poole and his co-conspirators.
“Chez is someone who we all wanted to get on when we started,” says Poole.
“We’ve been consistently trying to make it happen since we began talking about starting the club last summer.
“He’s very selective with his DJ gigs and the last time he played Manchester was five years ago, so we’re all super excited about having him on, especially in a venue as intimate as the Roadhouse.”
Damier’s arrival is indeed something of a coup for the Content team.
With his role at the Music Institute, he played a pivotal part in guiding the careers of DJs including Juan Atkins and Derrick May (the latter of whom closed the last ever night at the club with an emotional full run out for house standard Strings Of Life).
Today, Damier’s DJ sets command huge excitement, serving as testament to his affinity with the house music scene.
“Chez is someone that obviously has an impeccable ear for good music, so as you can imagine his DJ sets are littered with hidden gems and stone cold classics. It’s certainly one not to be missed,” says Poole, with the sort of enthusiasm that makes you think that if he wasn’t putting on the gig himself, he’d be queuing up to get in.
Content with Chez Damier and residents is on March 6, 2010 at The Roadhouse, Newton Street. 10pm-4am. £10.
