International Women's Day 2010
On Monday (March 8), the world will unite to mark International Women’s Day, a global celebration of the achievements of women throughout our history.
First marked in 1911, the day is now an official holiday in many countries and events to mark it range from afternoon talks with female high-flyers to full days of breakfasting, pampering and reliving the stories of today’s most inspirational girls.
In Manchester, Gorton Monastery is hosting a full day of workshops (on everything from health and nutrition to financial planning, handbags and bras) and discussions about equality, education and entrepreneurship, plus bespoke live music from local composer Michele.
The Working Class Movement Library gets its celebrations in early tomorrow with a set of readings from women’s literature from 11am, plus a discussion on women and politics with Sarah Irving – who looks at Palestinian activist Leila Khaled – and Linda Clair, who reflects on her time as chair of the Pankhust Women’s Centre.
The Lesbian & Gay Foundation also hosts its free Sugar & Spice event on Sunday, which includes a march through the streets to Sackville Gardens to raise awareness of women’s issues.
