Worthington's Crown pub gets national second place

A COUNTRY inn near Wigan has finished runner-up in a national pub competition.

The Crown Hotel, in Worthington, was one of three runners-up in the Campaign for Real Ale event, which was won by the Kelham Island Tavern, in Sheffield, for the second year running.

Besides quality of beer, the judges looked for atmosphere, decor, customer service, and all-round value.

The Crown, which was saved from redevelopment into flats five years ago, beat thousands of other pubs to reach the final four.

It serves eight real ales, home-cooked food and was Wigan pub of the year in 2006, 2008 and 2009.
