Hi-Life Awards 2010: Will Yang Sing triumph?
THE great and good of the region’s foodie scene will be heading out for the annual Hi-Life Dining Awards on January 29, with Yang Sing’s head chef Harry Yeung and Stock’s Enzo Mauro doing battle in the Best Chef category.
The best Manchester restaurant will be contested by Ithaca, Sam’s Chop House, San Rocco, Hale Kitchen and Sweet Mandarin – the latter fresh from their success on Gordon Ramsay’s F Word competition.
Meanwhile, Yang Sing appears again in the Best Overall Restaurant category, competing with Crab And Lobster (Thirsk, Yorkshire), Deane’s Restaurant, (Belfast), Thyme @ Sirloin (Preston) and Sam’s Chop House (Leeds).
Other Manchester nominees include Moss Nook Restaurant (Best North West Restaurant), Harvey Nichols Second Floor Restaurant (Best Platinum Restaurant), Kitchen @ The Circle (Best Newcomer), and The Living Room and Revolution (Deansgate Locks) which are both hoping to clinch the award for Best Atmosphere.
The Hi-Life Dining Awards, in association with Secured Mail, honour Hi-Life restaurants and chefs throughout the UK and Ireland, with nominees and winners voted for by members of Hi-Life Diners Club, the UK and Ireland’s largest dining club, which offers two for one dining for all members.

The awards evening, known as the HiLDAs, is taking place at Manchester’s Hilton Hotel on January 29, 2010.
Hi-Life company president, David Heeley, said: “The Hi-Life Dining Awards is an annual event which celebrates the very best chefs and restaurants the UK and Ireland has to offer. This year, the categories are tougher than ever, with over 100,000 Hi-Life members voting for only the finest chefs and top restaurants in each of the 11 categories. I would like to congratulate all the nominees and wish them every success on the night.”
BBC North West Tonight’s anchorman and news presenter Gordon Burns is hosting the evening, with acting and music legend, Noddy Holder and stars from Hollyoaks, Emmerdale and Coronation Street presenting awards.
This year’s Hi-Life Dining Awards charity is the NSPCC Child’s Voice Appeal. Auction prizes include a dinner party for eight people courtesy of Warrick Dodds, executive head chef of Hi-Life’s newest restaurant, The Hastings Eating and Drinking House in Lytham, which is due to be listed in this year’s Michelin Guide. Last year, Enzo Mauro from Stock Restaurant in Manchester donated a similar prize, which raised over £2,000 for Cancer Research UK.
Tickets for the awards are still available to purchase by calling 01253 608910. Priced at £75 per person, the tickets include a champagne reception and four course meal prepared by The Hilton’s head chef, David Gale. Entertainment is courtesy of jazz singer, Paul Pashley, and band, Cabaret.
