Holocaust Memorial Day 2010

ON JANUARY 27, it will be 65 years since the liberation of Auschwitz, the notorious German concentration camp where millions of Jewish prisoners lost their lives during the Second World War.

As a mark of respect and acknowledgement of the atrocities, the UK has marked that day with an official Holocaust Memorial Day since 2001. This year, it takes as its theme the legacy of hope – an aspirational desire to recognise the remarkable resilience of the human spirit and the lessons we all can learn.

There are events all over the city – in schools, galleries and other public spaces – in the lead up and on the day, including an impassioned talk from Holocaust survivor Jack at the Imperial War Museum North on Monday, and Champion Of The Child at the Jewish Museum, a heartbreaking story of Polish doctor Janusz Korczak who devoted his life to caring for orphans and victims of the German invasion.
