Asparagus Next Left turns one
THIS month sees the first anniversary of Star & Garter-based indiepop session Asparagus Next Left.
To celebrate, the club is having a special party tonight at which, according to co-founder Aziza Mills, the plan is to ‘bake lots of cake’ and ‘play amazing tunes all night’ (in that order).
With fellow promoter and DJ David Meller having decided that January makes the perfect time for a holiday (and who can blame him, with Manchester’s ice-strewn streets being about as hospitable as a wheelie bin with a dispersal order at the moment), it falls to Aziza to hold the fort.
To help, she’s roped in Natalie Bradbury, guitar/violin-wielding lead singer in local lo-fi lot The Shrieking Violets and a regular attendee at Asparagus Next Left.
On the group’s Facebook page, Bradbury lists their interests as ‘Port, pork scratchings and Parma Violets’, at least two of which should be available tomorrow.
Alongside those and the promised cake (and presumably badges), anyone who goes to the birthday party will be treated to a buffet selection of the tunes – from the likes of Pulp, Aztec Camera, Bis and Wire – which have enabled ANL to build up a loyal following among DIY indie types over the past 12 months.
Asparagus Next Left is on January 15, 2010 at the Star & Garter, Fairfield Street. 9pm-2am. £3/5.
