Carry On partying with The Drummatic Twins
QUESTION: What does a group of veteran club promoters and DJs do after more than a decade running one of the most successful club nights in Manchester’s history?
Answer: Carry on, of course.
Well, sort of.
After deciding that they no longer wanted to continue filling Oxford Road noise den The Phoenix with battle-hardened shirtless ravers and calling time on long-running breaks and techno night Tangled, founder Steve Thorpe, along with cohorts Craig ‘Resistance’ Whittaker, Danny Keehan and Ivano Knight, formed a new club by pressing together the smashed-up remains of the legendary all-nighter.
The resultant session, Carry On (pictured above right), borrows its name and elements of its branding from the Gerald Thomas-directed series of sex comedies, but has turned out to be far from as farcical or cringe-inducing.
The club started in September 2008, with a back-to-basics beats and breaks approach embellished by a renewed interest in electro and tech-funk and an emphasis on bringing big name guests to the party.
Funk-influenced
The club has played host to the likes of Jusme, Rico Tubbs and Krafty Kuts, not to mention a very special set from Klaxons-coverees Kicks Like A Mule.
After celebrating their first birthday, Thorpe and co. opened up a new chapter in the night’s history.
The Carry On Funk Sessions started on October 9 with the addition of a new element to proceedings: a second room hosted by another club.
For the second of the Funk Sessions, the Carry On crowd will be welcoming former Shades Of Rhythm ravers The Drumattic Twins, renowned for their funk-influenced sets.
Support comes from Herve-endorsed fidget upstart Peo de Pitte, residents Steve Thorpe and Resistance will keep things moving with Carry On classics and the keys to the second room have been handed to Banana, who’ll be laying on a spread of their blog house, electro and future funk mashup. Tonight’s Funk Sessions, as well as being the penultimate event in the all-too-brief series, will be the last to take place at The Ruby Lounge.
Next month’s party will be at Moho Live, where all-round decks maestro A-Skills will be bringing a hip hop flavour to the usual breaks madness, joined by professional snowboarder/DJ Scott Nixon.
Carry On with The Drumattic Twins is tonight (November 13, 2009) at The Ruby Lounge, High Street. 11pm-4am. £8/MOTD.
