WHEN the promoters behind Trash-o-Rama discovered  the Corner in Fallowfield, they realised it would make the perfect venue for their night of trash and sleaze music.

“It’s a proper dive bar, a mix of downtown New York and late 1970s and 1980s Manchester,” explains Keith Jukes, who runs the night with girlfriend Polly Esther. “This is the main theme running behind Trash-o-Rama.”

The couple, who used to run Danse Macabre at Night and Day and Are Friends Eclectic? at Retro Bar, elaborated: “We`ve got cheese, rarities, party music and generally great music from the past 50 plus years.”

She-Crunk and Lesbian Electro Rap

The fliers for Tash-o-Rama promise an unusual mix. Keith admitted: “We made a few up as a joke, in response to nights that advertise on flyers that they play ‘new` music.

"We thought it`d be funny to invent genres like She-Crunk and Lesbian Electro Rap to see how many people thought they were real.”

Among the real genres are Sock Hop, which Keith summarises as: “1950s music that kids used to go to dance halls and take their shoes off to dance to (see songs like The Fly, Do The Freddie, The Twist, Harlem Shuffle).”

Trash-o-Rama also offers visual imagery to go along with the music. Keith explained: “We show a mixture of New York films, 1950s TV shows, Americana, punk/rock ‘n’ roll films and Exploitation stuff.  Last month we showed Last Exit To Brooklyn, Taxi Driver & Baise Moi.”

Sleaze-o-ramas

Keith added: “The name came from 1950s drive-in movie specials called trash-o-ramas or sleaze-o-ramas where they played a selection of films in a row.”

Clubbers also have the chance to be snapped in front of Trash-o-Rama’s mugshot wall. Keith explained: “We showcase images of our favourite  trashy celebrities’ falls from grace throughout the night as a slideshow and take suggestions from people who come as to who they would like to see up there.”

Keith says Trash-o-Rama attracts a mixture of ‘queers, rockabillies, hardcore kids, Manc indie boys, students and even a drag queen compere’. He summarised: “We are a night for the socially inept, sewer dwellers, misfits, freaks and general outcasts of society and anyone else that is pissed off with the current Manchester ‘scene'.”

Trash-o-Rama will be headline DJing at Bizarre magazine’s Bizarre Ball in London on October 17th, as well as DJing at Zombie Pride for the LGF at Legends on October 30th. Jukes and Esther also guest DJ at other club nights in Manchester.

Trash-o-Rama takes place on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month at the Corner, Fallowfield, 10pm-2am, £3.
