WORK IT - hip-hop style - at the Institute
MAINSTREAM hip-hop is currently on a ventilator. Listen. That’s the sound if it wheezing out its sorrowful auto-tune death-rattle.
Now, I’m not naming names (Lil’ Wayne) but if you’re like me and you’d rather reminisce to a happier time - a time of Puffy not Diddy; Doggy Dogg not tired old Dogg, a time when hip-hopera star and general object of ridicule Mr. R. Kelly was the crooning Romeo heard at the end of every school disco, then worry not – because the clock’s turning back in Manchester with WORK IT.
Already a scenester smash on London’s East End, the concept night was born in April last year and plays nothing but the gem of '90s R&B and hip-hop all night long.
WORK IT has already hosted special events and shared line ups with Afrika Bambaataa, Q-tip and Grand Master Flash, hosted parties for Vice Magazine, Modular Records and Giles Peterson.
Recently interviewed on KISS FM, the WORK IT team are quickly going national...
So let’s go back to the vibrant not stagnant sound of 90s Hip-Hop and R&B. Throw up your Wu-signs, nod your head to the boom-bap and go back and forth with the groove & grind. Who’s requesting Biggie?
WORK IT takes place at The Deaf Institute on Saturday, July 25. 9pm-3am £5 entry.
