brave or fabulous enough?

MIRROR Mirror ('Manchester’s only dedicated night to trannies, truckers, lookers and ****kers') added a swathe of glamour to a burgeoning alternative gay scene when it first clattered across the cobbles over two years ago.

In a move that was symbolic as much as pragmatic the night left its old home at AXM on Canal Street for the salubrious Purple Pussycat where riotous events have tapped into the spirit of Taboo, 1930s Berlin, Kinky Gerlinky and New York’s Vogue Balls.  

Saturday, July 11, will see the brainchild of promoter Amber Swallows re-housed once again to Blink (underneath Affleck’s Palace) to host the Alternative Miss Manchester Ball 2009.  

The real Queen of Manchester

In a bid to find 'the real Queen of Manchester' contestants are invited to glam-slam their way to the top in one of three gruellingly fabulous categories: Dole Queue Dolly, Fem Realness and Car-Crash Celebrity. (Guest DJ Jodie Harsh should be able to guide punters through the latter, she’s Amy Winehouse’s gal-pal).  

In another major coup for the evening, performer Jonny Woo, once pioneer and now beloved stalwart of East London’s alternative drag scene, is making a return visit from his Shoreditch stomping ground to compere the evening where he will be ruthlessly assisted by Ma’ Butcher of London’s legendary Gay Bingo parties.  

Show-stopping performances

Accompanying Ms Harsh on the decks will be Kev Da’ Builder and resident Rod The Priest and as if all that wasn’t enough we’re also told to expect show-stopping performances from Rowetta and Veba. 

 If you’re brave or fabulous enough to enter, the rules state that 'points will be given for panache, poise, creativity, downright fierceness and above all else a true expression of your inner queendom'.  

Alternative Miss Manchester Ball 2009 Pre-Party Warm-up is at Velvet, Canal St from 6–10 pm, followed by a free Mirror Mirror Disco Bus from Canal St to Blink for the event.   For more information follow the link to the right of the page
