Indie stars go in search of Northern Lights

SEEKING NIRVANA: Jarman SEEKING NIRVANA: Jarman

NEVER ones to shirk a challenge, the promoters at long-running Wigan indie night, Northern Lights, have responded to competition from a new kid on the block by bagging two stellar-named DJs for July.

As the Club Nirvana-based Friday night regular will welcome über indie star Ryan Jarman from The Cribs on July 3, while Fratellis’ drummer Barry will take up the reins on July 31.

With a new LP, Ignore The Ignorant – their first with new full-time member (one Johnny Matt) – now in the can and a huge UK tour to follow, this should be a great chance to see what’s been floating the Wakefield frontman’s boat, musically, in recent months.

Fresh from appearing at Island Records 50th anniversary bash, Glaswegian sticksman, Barry Fratellis will continue to enjoy the downtime following second LP, Here We Stand, with a spell behind  the decks at the Clarence Yard club.

On the slots, Dylan Harris, Northern Lights co-founder said: “Every summer we try to do something special to celebrate our birthday and this year will be our biggest to date.

“We’ve now been running for six years and the time we’ve put into the night pays off more and more each year. The night is now the busiest it’s ever been.

“We’ve had several guest DJ’s in the past such as Mani, Bez and Shaun Ryder but it’s good to finally get down big names from today’s indie scene. You don’t get much bigger than the Cribs and the Fratellis so we’re really pleased they are coming down.”

Recently voted number one club in the north west by The Times, Harris and co will be hoping their success continues in the face of new arrival Indiependence’s emergence.

Fridays, Northern Lights, Club Nirvana, Clarence Yard, Wigan. Doors 10pm-4am. £4 entry or tickets available in advance from www.ticketline.co.uk or 0161 832 1111.
