Magazine to put on a Soap Show

SECOND CHANCE: Magazine SECOND CHANCE: Magazine

IT seems life on the road is beginning to agree with Magazine.

After initially only reuniting for a one-off Valentine’s Day special in February, demand proved so high the Manchester-formed post-punk legends quickly added a clutch of other dates - now they’ll return again this summer.

Under the banner of  ‘The Soap Show : Episode 2009’, the four-piece led by Howard Devoto will follow-up their winter ‘Real Life + Thereafter’ spree with three more dates, including a show at the Bridgewater Hall on August 29.

The show will cull it’s content from the evergreen and critically-acclaimed third album ‘The Correct Use Of Soap’.

Scunthorpe-born Devoto formed Magazine after leaving punk pioneers Buzzcocks just as they were about to breakthrough and went on to release four studio LPs plus live album, Play.

Now joined by original members Barry Adamson, John Doyle and Dave Formula plus former Luxuria collaborator and guitarist Noko, they are enjoying a new lease of life.

Always the connoisseur’s post-punk choice, Magazine have frequently been name checked by some of the most gifted musicians of recent years including Radiohead, Morrissey, Jarvis Cocker (who once covered perhaps their best-known single, Shot By Sides, at the Academy), U2 and Maximo Park.

NME.com even went as far as to include Magazine in a poll as one of the most influential bands of all time.

So if you couldn’t get out of the romantic meal for two booking in February, grab this chance with both hands.

Magazine play the Bridgewater Hall on Saturday, August 29. £27.50. Call 0161 907 9000.
