Boggart and BrewDog beers in the Arndale

Boggart Hole Clough - a different kind of watering hole Boggart Hole Clough - a different kind of watering hole

DOGMA, the controversial BrewDog bottled beer originally known as Speedball, has made it into the final of the 2009 Sainsbury’s Beer Competition and will, from July 13, be available in Sainsbury’s branches across the UK as customers are given control to choose which beer from the final 15 will gain a prestigious national listing.

Two of Scottish-based BrewDog’s other bottles, Hardcore IPA and Chaos Theory, which until now have opnly been available through specialised retailers, have also made it into the final.

A range of Brewdogs beers are available at the beer counter in the Arndale Food Market, which is now run by Moston’s Boggart Hole Clough Brewery, based near the park of that name.

The Arndale outlet offers Boggart’s beers on handpump plus a small array of guest ales.

Stately home

When I dropped by last week, these featured the aromatic Dark Star American Ale (4.7ABV), brewed using specially imported US yeast strains, Cascade and Centennial hops and Maris Otter malt.

But I couldn’t resist a mild from Thornbridge, a stately home near Bakewell where a Kiwi and and Italian are producing some of Britain’s most innovative beers.

The origin of their Cocoa Dance chocolate and mandarin mild (just £2.30 a pint) is an attempt to recreate the flavour of a Terry’s Chocolate Orange Segment in a beer! Learn more in a current brewery blog, http://beer evolution.word press.com/ 2009/03/. Cocoa Dance is utterly delicious as is Boggart’s own Rum Porter.
