Big Whistle Weekend

Bury Met Bury Met

THE whistle is a humble instrument, resigned to a clump on the desk of the music shop and often overlooked in favour of instruments considered to be more exciting.

Yet folk and traditional music wouldn’t quite be the same without the whistle, and The Met in Bury recognises and celebrates this with the annual Big Whistle Weekend, taking place this year on May 7, 8 and 9.

The third Big Whistle Weekend comprises of three days of concerts from the finest whistle players, plus sessions and workshops delivered by whistle experts.

Scots legends

Thursday May 7 sees Scots legends The Battlefield Band, take to the stage with guests multi instrumentalist Mat Walklate and former Ronan Keating guitarist, Jimmy Docherty.

Malinky, Salsa Celtica and The Bog Trotters will also be appearing during the course of the weekend.

Ultimate highlight of the event, however, must be the collaboration of young piping and whistle duo Ross Ainslie and Jarlath Henderson and Cormac Breatnach and Martin Dunlea, with guest Ali Hutton.

Entitled OVERton INDULGENCE, the gig is a tribute to the late Bernard Overton, the inventor of the popular low whistle.
