KEYS MONEY LIPSTICK: Bowing out in style

STOP PRESS! The boys from legendary indielectro night Keys Money Lipstick have announced that they are calling time on proceedings with two final parties in May.

The club has been a firm fixture on Manchester’s clubbing radar since launching three years ago at the Star & Garter. It was conceived as a reaction to the seemingly endless stream of dadrock indie nights plaguing the city and quickly became the nightspot of choice for right-minded youngsters uninterested in revisiting ‘Madchester’ for the millionth time.

The night also saw live sets from, among others, the Tigerpicks and little-known local band the Ting Tings (where are they now?) and has gone on to inspire several other progressive indie nights since it started.

Looking back, it’s hard to remember a time before town wasn’t full of hot new nights playing even hotter new sounds, but those who can recall 2006 will be well aware of the impact KML had upon its arrival.

“We were huge fans of Keys Money Lipstick,” said Barely Legal’s Steven McInerney, when he spoke to CityLife about his inspirations behind starting a night. “We wanted to become part of the chain of nights that we admire.”

“We're proud to have had such an influence on the club scene,” said Keys Money Lipstick’s Ian Jones, announcing his and co-promoter Justin Heaton’s decision to retire the night. “We’ve both come to the end of the KML cycle happy and that’s the best thing,” he added.

Keys Money Lipstick will bow out with parties on May 15 and 29 at the Star & Garter, Fairfield Street. Both nights will start at 10pm and cost £5 to gain admission to.
