“MOVES is the largest exhibition platform in the UK for experimental short film and new media,” explains festival director Pascal Moyse, of a unique festival which celebrates its fifth year.

It will focus on ‘movement on screen, exploring new ways of telling stories through films, installations and screen-based works’.

The last year has seen a world wide tour that took the best of Moves08 as far as Hungary, Brazil and Russia, but now the festival returns to Manchester with a six-day event exploring movement on screen through screenings, installations, workshops and open-space forums.

Highlights of this year’s festival include a special retrospective on Czech surrealist master Jan Svankmajer, a talk and performance on live cinema, YouTube real-time VJing and video game performance, poetry on film, plus a special event to introduce the emerging genre that is Machinima, a hybrid of augmented reality and do-it-yourself animation.

This year’s programme features feeatures more than 20 screenings and installations in 30 venues throughout the north west and the UK.

Audiences can enjoy treats in cinemas, bars, restaurants and on the giant outdoor BBC screens, and at home (through Moves’ their online programme).

Moves09 is at various venues, including Cornerhouse, from Thursday, April 23 until Saturday, April 28.
