THE British Bank Holiday Sunday has always been embraced by the public as a great opportunity to go a little bit wild and take advantage of the extra lie-in.

What better way to celebrate the next one then, than by heading along to one of the region’s newest venues and catching British Comedy Award winner Dave Spikey in action?

Plus as the veteran Bolton stand-up will be performing in aid of Paws for Kids – a charity that provides support for women, children and their pets escaping domestic violence and abuse across the North West – at Middleton Arena on May 3, you'll be doing your bit for charity too.

The star and co-writer of the smash hit Channel 4 comedy ‘Phoenix Nights’ and team captain of ‘8 Out Of 10 Cats’ brings his ‘Best Medicine’ show back to the region.

Christened after his father’s favourite saying (‘laughter is the best medicine’), the former hospital worker came to stand-up late in life, but is now more than making up for lost time.

On the charity’s important project manager Carole Marsden said: “Many women and children that suffer domestic violence have pets in the home, and if they leave violent relationships often the options available to their pets are limited.

“Unless family and friends can help out they are often left behind or put down, causing more stress for the family.”

“We provide a pet fostering service for the animals until their owners are rehoused, through a network of volunteers.

“I’m delighted that Dave is supporting us.”

The show, part of Dave’s nationwide tour, is part of a week of special events to launch the new arena that kicks off on April 25 when five times Olympic gold medalist rower Sir Steve Redgrave will be amongst the distinguished guests.
