MIF: Zaha Hadid's design for Bach
WORLD-renowned design firm Zaha Hadid Architects will collaborate with Manchester Art Gallery to transform one of the venue's exhibition spaces to complement works by JS Bach; in preparation for chamber music events during Manchester International Festival (July 2 to 19).
A team of architects will tailor the space to make it visually and acoustically ideal for a series of performances, including deliveries by pianist Piotr Anderszewski, cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras and violinist Alina Ibragimova - each of whom will perform one of JS Bach's solo woriks for an audience of just 200.
The new space will also be open to the public during usual gallery hours; and free during the daytime.
'Harmonic range'
Zaha Hadid Architects is a company reputed for its radical experimentation with modern design technologies; informed by thirty years of industry experience.
“As an articulation of the rhythmic and harmonic range Bach was able to achieve within the mathematical framework of his music, [our] design will explore this multiplicity by developing a coherent integration of formal and structural logic,” says Zaha Hadid.
"The aim is to create a near-perfect visual and sonic environment for the audience to experience some of the world’s best-loved chamber music," says festival director Alex Poots.
"Zaha Hadid Architects consistently come up with challenging and innovative ideas. It will be intriguing to see what they produce on this intimate level."
