MIF: Kraftwerk and Steve Reich to open

KRAFTWERK: The German electro pioneers open the festival 1 / 2 images

THE opening concert of Manchester International Festival 2009, on July 2, will feature a full set by pioneering German electronic group Kraftwerk and a new work by composer Steve Reich.

The event will represent Kraftwerk's first performance in Manchester for five years; and is to be the band's only indoor show in the UK during 2009 - making it a truly exclusive experience.

Reich's 2x5 was commissioned by the festival and is his first work since Double Sextet in 2007.

Written for a five-piece band, it will be played by New York's Bang On A Can All-Stars, featuring guitars, bass, keyboard and drums.
