Manchester Camerata experiments with African dance
IF you're partial to a bit of the ol' contemporary dance and music fusion, make sure not to miss the collaboration between Sakoba Dance Theatre and Manchester Camerata.
On Sunday, March 15, the UK's first post-traditional dance company and one of the UK's leading chamber orchestras join forces for a one-off performance at the Royal Northern College of Music.
To kick off the evening, local school children will perform a piece of music and dance created during workshops with the Camerata musicians.
Next, a short work entitled Okan'Nijo explores the way in which dance has evolved across decades and continents, and traces the roots of contemporary dance back to its origin.
God of the North Wind
Okan'Nijo is followed by Boreas, a solo work choreographed by the Director of the Dance Academy at Calderdale College and inspired by the Greek God of the North Wind.
The evening's centrepiece, Respite, is choreographer Bode Lawal's latest work.
It's a collaboration with the director Euton Daley MBE and musician Tunde Jegeda set to a score for traditional African flute (kora).
Camerata oboist Rachael Clegg and flautist Amina Hussain are set to provide the music for Lawal's philosophical choreography.
Tickets cost £10.00 (concessions £8.00) are available from the RNCM box office on 0161 907 5555
