Stretford hit by Green Windmill closure
ALAS, sad news from Stretford. Bar and live music venue The Green Windmill has closed.
The Arndale Centre-based nightspot opened last summer and went to host a clutch of hotly-tipped local acts (Keith, The Jessie Road Trip, Lowline) and revered old favourites (John Shack) plus regular acoustic sessions like Folk Me.
Inspiral Carpet and all-round Manchester muso Clint Boon was also a regular DJ and their Canteen showcase nights became a firm favourite in the local area.
Daniel Keehan, who looked after venues press, said: "Unfortunately The Windmill closed on New Year's Eve due to financial struggles.
"Hats really have to be taken off to Dave and Zoe the owners who persevered with the project despite all the risks - they really had it stacked against them with the location and current economic climate.
"The place will be remembered fondly by many as the cornerstone of what was hoped would turn out to be - 'the Stretford renaissance'."
Perhaps the venue will re-open later in the year if and when an upturn begins….
