Seven-up for Oasis at awards
IT'S gearing up to be a big, big year for Oasis. With three massive Heaton Park shows in June already to look forward to, the Burnage-formed rockers are also up for seven gongs at tonight's Shockwaves NME Awards.
The swaggering Gallagher brothers and Co - who will also headline Benicàssim this July - beat off competition from a host of hot new talent, to be nominated in the Best British Band, Best Live Band, Best Album, Best Video, Best Band Blog categories, while guitarist Noel Gallagher is also up for Hero Of The Year and the Best Dressed gong.
They'll find out if they've won at the ceremony, which will take place at Brixton Academy.
A typically cocksure Noel Gallagher said of the nominations: "Seven nominations you say? Is that all? I always new my time would come in the best dressed man in the world category."
Conor McNicholas, NME editor added: "Its clear that the NME readers' love affair with Oasis continues apace. Their latest album has proved they can play to their established fans and still encourage a new generation of Liam and Noels.
"But Oasis and the rest of the UK acts have got some stiff competition from our US cousins. Kings of Leon, MGMT and Vampire Weekend prove that the American music scene is on fire right now and the Obama-effect is helping us fall for American glamour all over again.
"I'd be surprised if NME readers didn't crown him Hero of the Year."
On the flipside Oasis are also up for Worst Band, while elsewhere The Ting Tings have been shortlisted in the Best Track category for It's Not My Name and the Manchester Apollo is up for Best Venue.
US shock popper Katy Perry is avoiding the ceremony by playing a show in Manchester - unsuprising really, as she's only nominated in the Worst Dressed category!

Hero of the year eh?
For what exactly? Hmm let me think,
1. For rampantly criticising the choice of Jay Z as a headliner at Glasonbury? Yeah, cos that wen't down well didn't it - Wonderwall intros and all th…
