Marissa Burgess' gigs of 2008

Nick Cave @ Manchester Apollo - He may have clocked up his half a century but this tour of the visceral, kick-ass, side of Cave’s back catalogue more than rocked the Apollo. Magnificent.

Camille O’Sullivan @ The Lowry - The Irish/French singer Camille was apparently nervous at the prospect of her first UK tour, she needn’t have been. Her unique interpretation of songs from the likes of Jacques Brel, Nick Cave and David Bowie was in turn dark, funny and incredibly moving.

Tindersticks @ Bridgewater Hall - To some they’re just a miserable lot that sound a bit like Vic Reeves club singing, to those that are truly in the know they are one of the most magical and beautiful bands around and this gig more than proved that.

Joan Baez @ Bridgewater Hall - Only a few years short of her 70th birthday yet the decades haven’t tarnished Baez who still has the power to voice the songs of injustice and beauty she has sung since the Sixties.

Portishead @ Manchester Apollo - Returning after 11 years away with a new album and tour, they more than made up for the absence with songs that were darker and more animalistic than anything they’d previously recorded.
