Glasvegas to headline second NME date
White Lies Friendly FiresIN the current economic climate the post-Christmas blues are expected to bite even more than usual this January, so the pressure is really on the traditional winter pick me up, which is the ShockWaves NME Awards Tour, to do a sterling job once again come 2009.
And the early signs are positive judging by the stellar line the weekly music bible have pieced together for their annual jaunt.
As following in the footsteps of The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, The View, The Cribs and our own Ting Tings to name but a few are one of 2008's band de jour's, Glasvegas.
The rockabilly-infused Scots have had critics and public alike positively frothing with superlatives thanks to their sublime, reverb-soaked debut.
Christmas EP
And after a clutch of sellout UK tours, impressive support slots (Oasis, Kings Of Leon) and a Christmas EP - the next 12 months should take James Allan and Co's firebrand form of social commentary into the big league.
Of course, the NME extravaganza has never just been about the headliners with Friendly Fires (presumably putting off their move to Paris a little while longer), White Lies (look out Editors they're coming for your Joy Division-inspired crown) and Florence and The Machine (kooky 6Music favourites) also sharing the bill.
Four great acts for under a score, even the stressed out bods on Threadneedle Street have got to be happy with those sort of figures.
The ShockWaves NME Tour plays Academy 1 on Friday, February 6 and Saturday, February 7. Call 0871 230 1094.
