Baking frenzy
CAKE lovers from far and wide will cram into Cup tomorrow night (October 7), as judging takes place at the Northern Quarter cafe bar's Bake Off.
The winner’s cake will be sold at the café and receive 10% of the profit of every slice sold for a whole year.
The event, held as part of the CityLife.co.uk Manchester Food And Drink Festival, is inspired by a recent boom in popularity for the domestic activity.
"Everyone is baking cakes. Could it be the credit crunch?" asks Cup owner Gary McClarnan.
“It’s odd but, as soon as I mention cake, a slice appears. I was at the opening of Liverpool’s Biennial the other week and somebody plucked out a raspberry tray bake and insisted I try some.
“Another time, I was explaining about the competition and a guy plunged into his rucksack and brought out a whole fruitcake for me to try.”
