PERHAPS the city's most cherished band, here are our top five Manchester (and Salford!) hangouts for Smiths' devotees:

Star & Garter, Fairfield Street, Piccadilly ­– Monthly disco nights to shake your gladioli too.

Coach & Horses, Eccles New Road, Salford - Watch many a quiff walk past in the direction of the infamous nearby Lads Club.

Night & Day, Oldham Street - Favoured spot of Smiths' axeman Johnny Marr who recently decamped to the venue with the Jarmans for a Cribs photoshoot.

Cask, Liverpool Road, Manchester – Great selection of Smiths and Morrissey on the Manchester-only jukebox.

The Ritz, Whitworth Street, Manchester – Site of The Smiths first gig although the music has changed these days.

There's a benefit gig in aid of Salford Lads Club Restoration Fund to be held on Thursday November 13th at the Star & Garter. Lots happening plus Ambitious Outsiders - A Tribute to Morrissey on stage at 9pm. Come along and support an excellent band and a great cause.

There's an excellent book called "Morrissey's Manchester" written by Phill Gatenby, which lists in detail loads of Smiths related places around Manchester, along with transport details and things to look out for. A must for the true Smiths devotees.
