Pop-up Cinema night
Film buffs have a couple of interesting events to draw them back to the big screen over the next week.
Tonight sees the launch of a new pop-up cinema night.
The Film Night takes outstanding movies and screens them in unusual venues and adds music, themed drinks and dancing to give a new, social twist to a night at the flicks.
The first event will be at media centre The Hive in Lever Street at 8pm tonight, with the quirky, edgy romantic comedy, Secretary, described as “Love Story meets Blue Velvet”. It stars Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader and won the 2002 Sundance Special Jury Prize.
After the film, at 10pm, the audience will head across the road to Kraak Gallery, the office-turned-alternative event space, for a Mad Men-style
office party, to dance the jitterbug to Sixties pop, sip cocktails and vodka jelly and play Pin The Beehive on Joan!
Organiser Carole Keating, of independent event producers Onwards!
(promoters of the 1940s Northern Quarter Street Party earlier this year) says: “My favourite kind of events are the ones that immerse you in a different era or place or world. I think it’ll be brilliant to watch such a wickedly funny, edgy film in such a professional office environment.”

On Wednesday, there is the chance to see an exclusive preview screening of the widely-anticipated film, The Woman In Black.
The film adaptation of the classic ghost story, which has been a huge hit in the theatre, stars Daniel Radcliffe (above) – in his first movie role since hanging up Harry Potter’s wand – as Arthur Kipps, a lawyer who is forced to leave his young son and travel to a remote village to attend to the affairs of the recently deceased owner of Eel Marsh House.
Working alone in the old mansion, Kipps begins to uncover the town’s tragic and tortured secrets and his fears escalate when he discovers that local children have been dying under mysterious circumstances.
When those closest to him become threatened by the vengeful woman in black, Kipps must find a way to break the cycle of terror.
The film – which also stars Ciaran Hinds and Janet McTeer – will be followed by a 30 to 40 minute question and answer session with director James Watkins, who will also present the film.
The film starts at 7pm on Wednesday with the Q&A session to follow.
Tickets, from the cinema, are £8.85 with concessions available.
