Must see: Adam Ant

Academy 2 - Sunday

After fighting so hard to rescue both his musical career (lost for years to mental health problems) and his youthful looks, Adam Ant better hope there isn’t a Gallagher visiting Manchester for the weekend.

Because last time we heard, Ant had struck up a war of words with Liam over an unreleased track that Beady Eye bassist Andy Bell had helped out on. And to be fair, it’s not his first beef with a great Mancunian: Joy Division and writer Paul Morley have also had it in the neck from the Ant.

But Gallaghergate does herald exciting news, because it’s proof positive that Ant is finally about to put out some new material after a 16-year hiatus – now confirmed as a full length album with the delicious title Adam Ant Is The Blueblack Hussar In Marrying The Gunner’s Daughter.

Further proof of that comes this week when the 1980s pop heartthrob – the King of the Wild Frontier whose gift to mainstream pop was tribal drums and a romantically dandy sense of style – brings his greatest hits and a few new flavours to the city on Sunday.
