More than a name
THE third venture in as many years from award-winning operators Joel Wilkinson and Adelaide Winter, Trof presents The Deaf Institute opened on 29th February.
News of the launch initially focused on the controversial choice of name. Originally dubbed Deaf And Dumb, after the words carved over the building's Grade II listed Grosvenor Street doorway, the moniker was quickly changed after it became apparent the first choice would cause offence.
The more exciting story, however, wasn't the venue's signage but its character and remit.
Its owners have invested heavily in a venue they've had their eye on for some time - and the result is an early candidate for their second consecutive bar of the year award.
This venture, which follows others in Fallowfield and more recently the Northern Quarter, sees its owners' design and operational expertise strikingly showcased. The usual long trading hours are in residence, and along with them the expected breakfast-through-dinnertime food offer that will make it popular with the surrounding student population.
Space
But extra space has allowed the team room to create a range of environments here: thus over three floors you'll find a ground floor canteen (all sociable bench and booth seating, quirky wallpaper and ubiquitous wood finishes); a VIP-vibey boutique basement bar; and, in the first floor music hall, the dramatic space the owners always wanted to stage full scale live music and club events.
The drinks are also a step up. Find the trademark Trof range of world beers: from the accessible Corona to more unusual selections, like Spanish beer Alhambra Reserve (just launched in the UK) and the frankly strange-tasting Schlenkerla Smoked.
But also try the cocktails, delivered rapid-fire by newly trained bartenders.
Tiki classic Mai Tais and Zombies are a highlight, as is the Collins Of The Day: gin, lemon and sugar plus the bartenders' choice of fruit.
And for people drinking with friends, the affordable option of pitchers is good to see. Cosmos, Mojitos, Bloody Marys and Dark And Stormys are currently on the list but, as with everything about this ace independent venue, don't expect the selection to stand still.
