Wrestling Mad @ The Lowry

JOHN Godber triumphs with his 50th play, which also marks his 21st anniversary as the founding member of Hull Truck, his excellent theatre company.

The man who found the fun in rugby league, with Up éné Under, now turns his attention to the wrestling scene in Bridlington, where a couple of failed actors, desperate to pay their rent, turn to the sport to make immediate cash.

Jack Brady (In Cold Blood) is perfect casting as Jack, the graduate with several degrees but no self-respect and Matthew Booth (Emmerdale) is also good as his self-centred flatmate who is desperate to be on television.

Socks off

Amy Thompson (Emmerdale) and Katie Baines (Hollyoaks) also work their socks off, playing all the female parts.

Godber directs this totally accessible work, which has the kind of audience participation you only get in pantomimes, with the laughter ringing out loud.
