Central: Greg Fuller
ARTIST Greg Fuller makes a return to Central Art Gallery, three years after his first highly successful exhibition in Ashton.
Fuller, who is interested in the land and trying to find new ways to interpret the landscape through paint, print and lately with a video camera, is showing an exhibition of work which explores concepts from maps to maths.
The exhibition includes drawing, paintings, film and sculpture. Talking about his drawing work, Fuller says:
éThrough drawing my environment I become aware of patterns that are hidden beneath the surface, which form the compositional element of the work.
Sensuality
"This allows me to explore the sensuality of surfaces in a more sculptural manner than traditional painting will allow, recreating an immediate physical response.é
The large paintings on show are constructed through layering and removing elements of paint, plaster, cement, or sand.
Fuller explains: éI aim to cut out a piece of reality and contain it within the two dimensional surface; to create a memory of a place.
éThe sensuality of the surface balanced with quiet colours (often direct representation of the environment) is a celebration of the quiet realities of life, realities whose beauty and subtlety is often hidden behind our familiarity with the ordinary. I live an ordinary life, in an ordinary place, it is only when I try to make work about them that I realise how extraordinary they are. é
Starting in January last year, Fuller turned to film shooting close up images of the land near his home in Warrington and also includes block sculptures as another element in the exhibition.
Landscape and Language by Greg Fuller is at Central Art Gallery, Old Street, Ashton until Saturday, November 27.
This exhibition is supported by Bang & Olufsen of King Street, Manchester.
