Single Review: Glasvegas – Flowers & Football Tops (Columbia)

Flowers & Football Tops (Columbia)

CityLife Rating: 4.0000 out of 5

IF you’re looking for THE track that conjures up the kind of sonic experience that earned Glasvegas all those My Bloody Valentine and Jesus And Mary Chain comparisons, it’s this: the band’s sincerest of laments – an ode to 15-year-old Kriss Donald, killed in a racially motivated attack in Glasgow near to where frontman James Allen grew up – laid out lovingly over a staggering seven minutes (a good two minutes of which is just the glorious, shimmering noise of humming guitars).

So you’re thinking ‘self indulgent’? You’re thinking they need to send their producer on a good editing course?

Yeah, well it’s age-old criticism levelled at the bands that inspired Glasvegas, and they never compromised their craft either.

Twenty years on, they’re hailed for their genius; is it any wonder Glasvegas have absolute faith in their output?
