Album Review: – Robin Thicke: Something Else (StarTrak/Interscope)
CityLife Rating:
AS a songwriter, Robin Thicke has the Midas touch, creating hits for the likes of Usher. But as an artist, even though his voice is soulful and incredibly soothing, there is something really samey about his second album.
Imagine Marvin Gaye, with a noughties twist and endless mentions of the words "Baby", "Love", and "Sweet" and you have all the ingredients for a soul seduction album.
Consistent it maybe, as Thicke's vocals and beautiful backbeats will leave many fans in a spin.
But despite the high production values, it does reek of Kenny Thomas with the endless whoops and almost spoken beginnings.
If you like good old fashioned soul, this might do the trick. But I would prefer to hear it through the grapevine via Mr Gaye himself.
