The Courteeners: That Kiss (Loog)

CityLife Rating: 3.0000 out of 5

SEEING a band put in more work than is absolutely necessary and release a non-album track gets us all a little dizzy with excitement in this digital, capitalist age.

The evidence? The fuss surrounding The Courteeners latest single – a melancholic, kitchen sink ballad not available on any other record.

Actually, it makes perfect sense that it isn’t on St Jude, and that Liam Fray and Co have snatched the moment to put out a Phil Spector ode at a time when Glasvegas are busily spray painting his Wall Of Sound and causing a revived interest in (of all things) his Christmas album.

The Ronettes-inspired chorus stands out as the most obvious reference point – and sticks fast in your head – while the rest of it relies on the way Fray tangles his barbed lyrics round its sparse melody.

And he’s becoming quite the bard: “That kiss it lasted too long/And we probably shouldn’t have danced to that song,” he laments. I think we’ve all been there…
