CHRISTMAS SPECIAL: Glasvegas

1 / 1 imagesCHRISTMAS SPECIAL: Glasvegas

NOT since Phil Spector’s 1963 album A Christmas Gift For You has a festive record been talked of in such respectful tones.

And CityLife reckons Glaswegian shoegazers Glasvegas would be pretty pleased with that, because it was in the visionary producer’s honour that they wrote their new mini album, A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like A Kiss).

Scaled back from the planned full-length record boasting all kinds of guest appearances that guitarist Rab Allan told CityLife about back in the summer, A Snowflake Fell is tipped as high as 33/1 by some bookies to be Christmas No 1 – that’s better than Cliff or the Kings Of Leon.

And it would, of course, would top off 2008 nicely.

In the 12 months since a furious bidding war erupted over who could/would sign them, James and Rab Allan, Paul Donoghue and Caroline McKay have made 2008 their own, scoring a top 10 album, two chart-topping singles (Geraldine and the heartbreaking Daddy’s Gone) and recording with the one and only Rich Costey (Rage Against The Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Interpol).

They’ve toured the world, climbed from the toilet venues into 2,000 capacity halls and redefined the Scottish music scene, blowing away the cloud of groovy punk-funk left by Franz Ferdinand.

Still wondering what all the fuss is about? Well, you’re pretty much alone because this band can sell out gigs quicker than James Allan can come up with unorthodox requests for his record company.

Your chance to find out what you’ve been missing is on Monday, when the band hit the city for a final time this year. If you can get a ticket, that is…

*Prior to the gig, the band will perform and sign copies of their Christmas mini LP at Zavvi in the Arndale Centre tonight at 5.30pm. This is a wristband only event. Wristbands are available on a first come first served basis to personal callers only.

Glasvegas headline the ShockWaves NME Awards Tour on February 6 and 7.
