STOCKPORT's John Booth Wines is hosting a series of wine tasting sessions in Heaton Moor and Marple Bridge, several of which are particularly designed to highlight some lesser-known wines.

The sessions, split between Kro Heaton Moor and Christies Cafe in Marple Bridge, include...

September 23 - Unusual Grape Varieties - Kro Heaton Moor
October 1 - Around France - Christies Cafe
October 7 - Shiraz - Kro Heaton Moor
October 21 - Italian - With Dinner - Kro Heaton Moor
October 29 - Hidden Spain - Christies Cafe
November 11 - Southern France - Kro Heaton Moor
November 12 - Italy And The South - Christies Cafe
December 2 - Christmas Wines - Kro Heaton Moor
December 3 - Christmas Wines - Christies Cafe

All sessions start at 8pm.

For more information, contact John Booth Wines by calling 0161 427 0446.

Kro Heaton Moor: 110 Heaton Moor Road, Heaton Moor, Stockport, SK4 4NZ
Christies Cafe: 22 Town Street, Marple Bridge, Stockport, SK6 5AA
John Booth Wines: 27 Low Lea Road, Marple Bridge, Stockport, SK6 5AB

The first session (September 23) aims to introduce wine-lovers to a new array of possibilities by focusing on less-promoted varieties.

New world wineries headed by Australia and California were the first to name grape varieties in their labels, rather than the old world tradition of simply naming regions.

Unsurprisingly – as grape variety is such an important factor in taste – the idea caught on. But first to be promoted were varieties from the most famous regions.

Now, John Booth Wines would like to spread the message that many varieties who missed out on this initial promotion are nevertheless superb.

I could not agree more Mr McGrath, I had the pleasure of sampling a delightful wine from Uruguay the other evening, namely the Bodegas Castillo Viejo - Cabernet Franc, Family Reserve. It has an intense nose with good structure and tannins which all conribute to a very good finish. A very good finish it was indeed, I suggest you get on to your wine merchant and ask him to track down a bottle for you, it will roughly set you back a measely £10.

Enjoy

Yes valid point Howard I've recently tried out a Argento Malbec 2007 Mendoza as recommended by 'Majestic Wine' it has Ripe bramble and spicy blackberry notes on the nose and with hints of vanilla oak and balanced acidity on the finish is quite a versatile drink and good with fish but better with red meat. Also Cono Sur Merlot 2007 Colchagua Valley. A serious merlot from a very progessive Chilean winery. Intense ruby red, plum and green pepper-like red with a smooth finish. I think there is alot to be said for South American wine.

Are there any plans to do a wine tasting session for Argentinian wines, as a big fan of Argentinian steak, Malbec from Argentina is the only way to go.

Too much emphasis is still on French and Italian wines if you ask me!

I followed Mr Booths advice on a bottle of 2006 Vina Mocen, Viura/verdejo from Loire sauvignon blanc probably the best white wine area in Spain nice and crisp ideal for white fish.
