So well attended was 2009’s Big Green Festival that organisers have decided it is high time they made a regular thing out of it.
The second festival takes place on Saturday, March 27 at Chorlton’s St Clement’s Church and the nearby school – a bigger site than last year to accommodate an anticipated crowd of more than 4,000 people.
The site opens at 11am, but the first major draw of the day is likely to be the Big Green Bike Parade, which leaves the festival site for a leisurely cycle around Chorlton at 12pm. Cyclists are encouraged to dress up for the occasion to champion the joy of life of two wheels.
Replacing last year’s wheelie bin decorating competition is the scarecrow making contest – open to all, especially those grow-your-own enthusiasts with a flourishing veggie patch to protect!
Other craft events (including flower pot and glass painting and classes showing you how to turn ‘trash into treasure’) and food workshops run throughout the afternoon. Music takes the event into the evening with two stages dedicated to live bands, dance and ceilidh.
On a solar-powered stage in the day there’s Albert Thompson, Dr Butler’s Medicine Hatstand Band and Taylor Giacoma, while among those charged with keeping everyone dancing until the festival closes at 11pm are Thingumabobs And The Thingumajigs, Blind Atlas, I Am Blackbird and The Rothwell Incident.
If that all sounds a bit rowdy for you, you might want to check out one of the free taster sessions with the many professional practitioners of alternative therapies on hand during the event.
Experts in herbal medicine, massage, meditation, reiki, sound therapy, breathing therapy buteyko and life coaching will be upstairs in the church.
And in the green spirit of the festival, visitors are also encouraged to bring unwanted clothing and items for the swap shops and fashion shows to recycle goods and raise money for the RSPCA.
