Great Northern's racing fest
QUIET drinks in Great Northern Square will be interrupted by the bray of horses today as Haydock Park brings the racing experience into Manchester city centre.A one-day event to encourage a new generation of potential race enthusiasts, the extravaganza features top jockeys, including Grand National winner Timmy Murphy, stars of Channel 4's TV coverage and even the four-legged friend of Donald McCain - the son of Red Rum trainer Ginger McCain.
A big screen will beam live racing into the square while spectators can also get involved with sweepstakes, riding simulators and the more elegant art of sipping cocktails on the terraces.
Great Northern Square, outside the Great Northern Warehouse, Peter Street, today (3pm-8pm), free.
