CITY SCREENING: Fuera Del Cielo

THE Institute Cervantes has once again delivered the perfect antidote to a night at the Odeon with yet another blisteringly good screening.

Fuera Del Cielo (Beyond the Sky) continues the excellent Cine en Construccion series and is a frantic and violent critique of life in a tough urban setting. The story follows two brothers as they roam the streets of Mexico City trying to score Crystallized Methamphetamine for their desperate mother (come on, we’d do the same if she asked!).

At first glance this could be mistaken for yet another clichéd tale from the mean streets (one brother is fresh out of prison the other is a boxer, they both have scores to settle etc etc) but don’t be fooled this is a very, very intelligent film and director, Javier Patron, sensibly steers away from glamour and sentiment. Instead what he gives us is a balanced insight into the troubled minds of two characters trapped by circumstance and loyalty.

The film swings between reality and the dreamy fantasies of the younger brother, Cucu, as his mind wanders to a better place. This excellent narrative structuring is huge testament to Patron’s confidence and talent as a film maker. Momentarily taking us away from the violent underbelly of Mexico City just makes it all the more terrifying when we are forced to return.

Not only is this the best film that is showing in Manchester on the 20th November it is also free leaving you the money you would have spent on admission and popcorn for more sensible things like mulled wine and German sausage!

The screening begins at 6.30pm and is being held at the Institute Cervantes, 326 Deansgate.
