John Shuttleworth: The Minor Tour
JOHN Shuttleworth, the “versatile singer/songwriter from Sheffield”, is a bit worried about the title of his new show The Minor Tour (And Other Mythological Creatures).
He doesn’t want you wasting your money, you see, if you’re expecting to find out a lot about Greek mythology.
The tour title, apparently, all stems from a misunderstanding with his neighbour and sole agent Ken Worthington.
John, it seems, just asked Ken to set up a few dates before Christmas – a “minor tour”.
But Ken had been on holiday in Greece and got the wrong end of the stick - fairly inevitably as long-term fans of this marvellous comic character will know!
John does, though, have a lot of new songs to sing, such as the self-explanatory One Cup Of Tea Is Never Enough, and more than a few worries and concerns to share.
Confectionary packaging
There’s the inherent perils of scarves as opposed to the comfort of the fleece to consider, for instance, as well as the inappropriate modernisation of confectionery packaging – you know, the sorts of things that really matter in our lives, as opposed to obviously made-up stories about a woman with snakes for hair, which has surely got to be unhygienic.
Yes, John, one of the great comedy creations of modern times, is back, and very welcome he is too.
So too is the luckless musicologist Brian Appleton, another – and ever-improving - character from former Manchester Poly student Graham Fellows, and, by satellite link, the laser screeder (no, nobody knows) Dave Tordoff, as well as a sneak preview of John/Graham’s new film Southern Softies.
It might not be John’s best show, but it’s got to be hard to follow previous triumphs and this is still tremendously entertaining and inventive.
What did you think? Have your say.
