Guilty Pleasures
IF dancing round the bedroom and singing into a hairbrush is your favourite was to spend an evening then Guilty Pleasures is the place to party like a pop star.
Guilty Pleasures is the once monthly club night at The Deaf Institute that celebrates everything pop, cheesy and downright guilty.
It is part of a growing trend of unabashed pop celebrations where you can dance the night away to the likes of ELO, 10cc and the Theme tune from Cheers.
On arrival at the venue it is clear that the music is the star as well as resident DJ Jane Weaver singing and gyrating in silver sequins to Club Tropicana underneath a giant disco ball.
Amongst the flashing lights and the dancing glitterati a big screen plays videos of dance troupe Pan's People in case anyone is short on moves. ‘The Erection Section’ winds the evenings entertainment down, when people come together, slow dance and sing their hearts out to Dionne Warwick’s Heartbreaker, ending with Take That’s Never Forget.
“The music played by Guilty Pleasures won’t ever make the rock critics top ten’s but we play it free of irony and celebrate pop in all it’s forms” says Sean Rowley who started the night back in 2004 in a Hammersmith working mans club.
"You get almost a euphoric atmosphere in the club. Tom Middleton, who came down to DJ for us, said it felt like an acid house club without any drugs. It's almost like people have a sense of release when they hear this music."
Since discovering that he was not alone in his love for all things pop, the night has evolved moving to Manchester in 2007, where it has taken up a once monthly residency at The Deaf Institute.
