Another full house for Mahler – this time the fifth symphony, played by the Hallé under Sir Mark Elder’s baton. But maybe some of those present came as much for Uri Caine as for Mahler. His Scenes From Childhood, written for the Hallé Youth Choir and Orchestra, had its world premiere, and was very good to listen to.

Founded nearly 40 years ago, the William Byrd Singers have been the pre-eminent small amateur choir in the north west for probably most of that time. And until last year they had one director, Stephen Wilkinson.

It's been a good week for piano recitals. First there was Murray Perahia at the Bridgewater Hall (February 15), completing the ‘mini-residency’ he began by appearing as conductor with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields late last year.

Mahler packed ’em in again for the BBC Philharmonic’s concert on Saturday – and particularly men. Mahler seems to have more of a male following than any other composer – at least it’s only when he’s on the menu that you get queues in the men’s loos, in my experience.

IT’S a long time since I have seen such a queue of people waiting hopefully for the odd returned ticket to get into a concert at the Bridgewater Hall – and that sight on January 28 showed how Manchester’s Mahler symphony cycle idea has caught on.

YOUNG violinist Valeriy Sokolov is quite a hot property this year. Manchester Chamber Concerts Society have got in first - and presented him in recital with his pianist colleague Evgeny Izotov at the Royal Northern College of Music.
