THE idea of celebrity is challenged artistically in a new exhibition in Tameside, featuring portraits of British South Asian people in the limelight.

The exhibition, called Parampara, consists of paintings by Punjabi-born J Chuhan from Chorlton of South Asian people who have set trends or made a difference in British society.

Chuhan's choice of subjects - ranging from Granada news presenter So Rahman and actors Jimmy Mistry and Mina Anwar to doctor and lecturer Dr Aneez Esmail and director of Patak foods Meena Patak.

Parampara - which is the Sanskrit term for following in a chain reaction - is initiated by SHISHA, the Manchester-based South Asian arts organisation.

Parampara is at the Central Art Gallery, Ashton-under-Lyne, from Friday, January 9, until February 28.
